Bio
Matouš Zukal is one of the most remarkable representatives of the young generation of pianists. In 2021, he became a laureate of the prestigious Prague Spring International Piano Competition, where he was awarded Second Prize, the Gideon Klein Foundation Prize, and the Czech Centres Prize. Already in 2019, he won the Bohuslav Martinů Foundation Competition, where he also received the Prize for the Best Participant, the Prize for the Best Interpretation of a Composition by Bohuslav Martinů, and the Zorka and Jaroslav Zich Prize. In 2023, he won First Prize at the Verão Clássico Festival in Lisbon. In 2025, Matouš became the winner of the Concours international de piano d’Île-de-France and competition of Martha-Debelli-Stiftung.
číst víceAs a soloist, he has performed with the Prague Symphony Orchestra FOK, the Pardubice Chamber Philharmonic, the Brno Philharmonic, and the Pilsen Philharmonic. He has taken part in festivals such as Dvořák’s Prague, the Prague Spring, Smetana’s Litomyšl, the Rudolf Firkušný Piano Festival, and Concentus Moraviae, and has performed in the subscription series of the Czech Chamber Music Society. As part of the Smetana Days in Pilsen, he contributed to a complete performance of Bedřich Smetana’s works for solo piano. Since the 2022/23 season, he has been listed on the Young Artists List of the Czech Music Fund Foundation. He has made recordings for Czech Radio and Czech Television.
In addition to his solo career, he is actively involved in chamber music. He has collaborated with the Janáček Quartet, Stamic Quartet, Sedláček Quartet, Kukal Quartet, Martinů Voices, and other ensembles. From 2019 to 2023, he was a member of the Academy of Chamber Music led by cellist Tomáš Jamník, with whom he performed at numerous concerts and prestigious festivals, including Styriarte in Graz.
He regularly participates in masterclasses and receives guidance from leading figures such as Sir András Schiff, Daniil Trifonov, Lukáš Vondráček, Boris Giltburg, and Francesco Piemontesi. He has repeatedly attended masterclasses in Bergen, Norway, under the guidance of Jiří Hlinka, Leif Ove Andsnes, and other renowned teachers. In 2021, he was accepted as a scholarship holder into the International Music Academy in Liechtenstein, studying with Prof. Milana Chernyavska, and in 2022, he participated in the Mendelssohn Academy in Leipzig under Prof. Pavel Gililov.
After graduating from the Grammar and Music School of the City of Prague under the guidance of Jitka Němcová, he studied at the Prague Conservatoire with Ivo Kahánek, continuing in his class at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, where he also studied with Jan Bartoš. For his academic achievements, he received the Bauše-Ruys Prize and the Viktor Kalabis and Zuzana Růžičková Foundation Award. He is currently pursuing doctoral studies at the Music and Dance Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague and simultaneously completing a master’s program at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz in the class of Markus Schirmer.
